Our History
2016
THE SPRINGFIELD
We bought the banquet hall at the end of 2016, and remodeled during most of 2017. Reopening at the beginning of 2018, we started a new chapter for the hall.
1962
KUNKEL’S BANQUET HALL
The hall reopened as a full Banquet Hall. Before today’s fire codes, they were able to accommodate 400 guests in the main hall. Funerals and smaller gatherings were hosted in the lower hall, next to Kunkel’s Cafe.
1947
PRIMACK DRESS FACTORY
The textile industry was booming in the area, almost a rival for the coal industry. From 1947 to 1962, the building was leased to the Primack Dress Factory.
1932
KUNKEL’S HALL
The Kunkels took over again, as a dance hall and ballroom. The hall hosted a parade of the popular big bands and orchestras of the era. They even had bingo, dinners, and roller skating events!
1931
FIREMAN’S HALL
The hall was remodeled and leased to East End Fire Company, dedicated as “Fireman’s Hall.” They held many dances, with the popular bands of the time.
1924
SCHOOL SPACE
The hall was leased to the school district as overflow classroom space.
1910
OLDER USES
The hall was likely built before 1910, but the earliest information we could find included using the hall as a basketball court (there must have been a much higher ceiling before being rebuilt after a fire in 1966), and selling “horses, coal wagons, and spring wagons” in the alley.
We’ve scoured Newspapers.com for articles and ads about the hall and events, and have included a handful of them below. If you’d like to see others, please contact us.
